It seems that the fact of starting the matches from bench does not prevent Lionel Messi from breaking records, as the Barcelona captain now scored more goals than any other La Liga player as a substitute in the 21st century.
Barcelona hosted Leganes on Sunday when team Barcelona captain started at the bench. Coach Valverde’s decision to relax the Argentinian did not last long when he was introduced to the game shortly after Martin Braithwaite’s cancelled Dembele goal in 57th minute for Leganes.
The defending champions scored a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Ousmane Dembele, Luis Suarez and Messi. Although Messi has been on the first team list for years, he is the player who scored the most League goals as a sub in the 21st century. The Catalan captain has 22 La Liga goals as substitute for Barcelona and a total of 34 goals and five assists in his 76 appearances for the club starting from bench.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner contributes 28 goals for Catalans with 10 assists and 18 goals- nine of those coming in his last six appearances.
The victory against Leganes brings the Liga Champions 46 points from 20 games. Atletico Madrid are second with five points behind, followed by rival Real Madrid, who climbed to third with 36 points.
