Real Madrid Snatch a 2-1 Win Against Ajax after VAR Controversy

It was an entertaining football game as Real Madrid beat Ajax FC by 2-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

Ajax FC started the match superbly and created problems to Madrid’s defence in the first half of the match as VAR made a controversial first appearance against Nicolas Tagliafico. However, Real Madrid remains calm as the game progressed, taking the lead through Karim Benzema in the 60th minute. However, in form Hakim Ziyech, nullified Madrid’s advantage in 75th-minute of game, but Marco Asensio helps visitors to retain the lead just three minutes before the end of the match.

The defending champion had 49% of possession during the game and had eight shots on target as compared to the seven from Ajax. The return leg of round 16 will be played on 6th March at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid started the season badly under Julen Lopetegui before he was sacked. Former Real Madrid player Santiago Solari was appointed as new coach in his place, and they managed to revive their season under his leadership. The Los Blancos are currently in 2nd place in the league, six points behind defending champions Barcelona. They will next play Girona and Levante in the league before heading for the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu on 28 February.

While Ajax is in the second place of the Eredivisie and six points behind the leaders PSV Eindhoven. They will next play HAC and Den Haag in the league before competing against mighty Feyenoord in the KNVB Cup on 18 February.
