National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 every year to remember Dhyan Chand on his birthday from almost four decades.
Major Dhyan Chand, the Hockey wizard of India who packed away three Olympic gold. Dhyan Chand, broadly known as the hockey wizard is thought to be one of the best players ever of Indian Hockey.
Born on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand is remembered for his goals, strategy and speed by which he was able to win three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936 – when India turned into the most prevailing group in hockey.
In 1956, Dhyan Chand was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, but Dhyan Chand couldn’t get the Bharat Ratna.
On June 7, 2017, previous Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel had kept in touch with the Prime Minister’s Office asking for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to be awarded to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
Amid his last days, when doctors asked him, “What is the future of Indian hockey?” Dhyan Chand answered, “Hockey in India is done.” as per Bhartiya Hockey site. Dhyan Chand passed on December 3, 1979, in Delhi .
