Indian Tennis Player Ankita Raina wins another medal for India in Asian Games and become the second female tennis player from the country to win a medal in singles at Asian Games after the Sania Mirza, who won a silver in Doha in 2006, followed by a bronze in 2010.
1-4 down in the first stage, Ankita came back aggressively and won the first set against Eudice Chong 6-4 and then swept aside the tennis player from Hong Kong in the second 6-1 in the quarter-final match in Palembang.
Ankita went down in semi-final against China’s Zhang by 4-6,6-7. Ankita was not 100 percent fit and called for a medical time out in the middle of the match. But despite the injury, she continued to give a good fight to Zhang, stretching the second set to the tie-breaker. But eventually, Zhang was able to counter Raina with her speed and strong returns, Raina had to settle for the bronze medal and could not reach the final.
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan won the Men’s Doubles semifinals 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 against K Uesegi and S Shimabukuro from Japan and assured themselves of at least a silver medal at the Asian Games. The Men’s Doubles Final is on Thursday.
